During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Real-time procedures were executed on May 9 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the patches uplinked on May 8. The dumps will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground. Additional real-time procedures were executed during each ground contact to reset the DSN Outage Dead Man Load. A Chandra image release was issued on May 11 featuring observations of the galaxy cluster system Abell 2384 taken with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, ESA's XMM-Newton, and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope in India. The combined observations reveal two component clusters that have collided, leaving a bridge of X-ray emitting hot gas between them. This new multi-wavelength view reveals the effects of a jet shooting away from a supermassive black hole in the center of a galaxy in one of the clusters. The jet is sufficiently powerful to bend the shape of the gas bridge and, unusually, originated from a galaxy not at the center of the galaxy cluster. For details, see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2020/a2384/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below, and includes an observation of SGRJ1935+2154, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on May 6, an observation of SwiftJ1858.6-0814, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on May 4, and observations of IRAS15175-4508 and Haro1-10, which were accepted as Director's Discretionary Time Targets of Opportunity on Feb 19. |
