During the last week Chandra science observations continued to be suspended while the team develops and executes procedures to swap the High Resolution Camera (HRC) instrument to its B-side electronics. On Aug 31 a real-time procedure was executed to turn on the HRC B-side 5V, +/-15V and 24V power supplies and configure the instrument for subsequent operation. Another real-time procedure was executed to update a Control Processing Electronics (CPE) parameter to prevent an extended attitude hold condition on the next Safe Mode transition. On Sep 2 a real-time procedure was executed to disable the FA6 heater which had previously been enabled in order to maintain the HRC thermal environment while the power supplies were off. On Sep 3 a real-time procedure was executed to uplink a flight software patch to reconfigure the on-board computer to use the B-side HRC channels. Additional real-time procedures were executed on Sep 4 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the flight software patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory image maintained on the ground. Real-time procedures were executed during each ground contact to reset the DSN Outage Dead Man Load. Of note this week was the announcement on Aug 31 that Dr. Patrick Slane of the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian has been named the next Director of the Chandra X-ray Center, which controls science and flight operations for NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory. A Chandra image release was issued on Sep 2 describing a montage of images showcasing the combination of data from telescopes that collect different kinds of light. This "multiwavelength" approach to astronomy is crucial to getting a complete understanding of objects in space. NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory provides the X-ray view of the objects in this collection. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2020/archives/ |
The current unavailability of the HRC instrument prevented nominal operations last week.
