Operations CXO Status Report

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on May 17 to uplink a flight software patch that updates several Telescope subsystems K-Constants to prevent grating insertion/retraction movement failures. Additional real-time procedures were executed on May 18-19 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground.

A Chandra press release was issued on May 22 describing observations from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the NSF’s Very Large Array that imply that jets from from black holes can change directions. By examining data from 16 galaxies with central black holes, a team was able to chart the directions of the jets both today and in the past. About a third of the jets appear to have significantly changed directions over the course of about 10 million years or less. X-ray data reveal cavities in the hot gas that marks where the jets used to point, while radio data show where they currently are aiming. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of SZ Cha coordinated with HST and JWST, and an observation of SS 433 coordinated with Swift.
