| Last week the observing schedule was halted due to high radiation
associated with solar flare activity. The loads were halted on Jan 8
at 8:45am EST through a ground command to execute the SI Safing SCS
107. This ensured that the accumulated radiation dose for ACIS
remained below the allowed threshold. Loads were restarted at 7:26pm
EST on Jan 10. Observations of 3C 388 and G63.7+1.1 (total 61 Ks) were
impacted by the event and will be rescheduled in a later load. Harvey Tananbaum and Martin Weisskopf were jointly awarded the 2004 Bruno Rossi Prize of the High Energy Astrophysics Division of the American Astronomical Society on Jan 7. The citation recognizes their vision, dedication, and leadership in the development, testing, and operation of the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We all offer Harvey and Martin our congratulations! On Jan 15 the ground team completed the installation to operations of an update to the On-line System (version 3.9.4). The update includes a number of performance data handling improvements. The schedule of observations for the next week is shown below and includes observations of Saturn and the Earth. Also included in the loads is the Jan 18 commanding for the first of seven eclipses in the 2004 Winter eclipse season. |
