During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as
planned.
A real-time procedure was conducted on Apr 7 to permanently turn off the ACIS detector housing heater. The decision follows a series of cooling tests that indicate that the turn-off will reduce the thermal load on the ACIS focal plane due to the overall increasing heating trends of the Observatory and relieve mission planning constraints. Of note last week was the Chandra User Committee meeting held at the CXC on Apr 9-10. A Chandra image release was issued on Apr 9 of the energetic jets emitting from the young star DG Tau. The image shows the first double-sided X-ray jet ever detected from a young star. A similar jet may have been launched from the young Sun and could have had a significant impact on the early solar system. For details see: http://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2008/dgtau/ The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below. |
