During the last week the observing schedule was interrupted following a high radiation event at 10:20pm EST on Nov 9 that stopped the daily load and activated the science instrument safing sequence (SCS 107). All actions were nominal and radiation levels dropped sufficiently to allow the loads to be restarted at 4:54 am on Nov 11. Observations of 0156-252, 0406-244 and MACSJ2049.9-3217 (total 54.5 Ks) were impacted by the event and will be rescheduled in a later load.
Last week a combined Level 2 and Flight Director Board approved a reduction of the aspect camera bright Earth limitation from 20 to 10 degrees. The change was approved following the completion of a series of engineering tests and will improve scheduling flexibility, especially for attitudes near perigee. Of note was the release on Nov 12 of the CIAO 2.3 analysis software together with CALDB 2.18. The release includes a new tool that can be used to apply the CTI (charge transfer inefficiency) adjustment procedure. This correction restores some of the resolution lost due to radiation damage to the ACIS detectors early in the mission. For details, see http://cxc.harvard.edu.
