Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 22 November 2013 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A Chandra image release was issued on Nov 15 describing a new image from Chandra's deep data of Cassiopeia A (Cas A for short) that improves the appearance of the different bands of X-rays. Cas A is the debris field left behind after a massive star exploded. This explosion would have appeared in Earth's sky over 300 years ago. This image and a 3D model of the explosion are being featured in a new 3D project at the Smithsonian Institution. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2013/casa/

A Chandra press release was issued on Nov 20 as a NASA press release describing evidence for a jet from Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the Milky Way's center. Jets of high-energy particles are found throughout the Universe on large and small scales. A jet from the Milky Way's black hole would reveal information about how it is spinning. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/13_releases/press_112013.html

Of note this week was the release on Nov 19 of CALDB 4.5.9. This update includes ACIS time-dependent gain corrections for the period Aug-Oct 2013, ACIS time-dependent contamination correction file, and the HRC-I gain map and corresponding background spectrum for 2013-09-16 onward. For details see: http://cxc.harvard.edu/caldb/downloads/Release_notes/CALDB_v4.5.9.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes observations of GRB 131108A, which were accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Nov 12.
