During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. Chandra passed through the eleventh, twelfth, and thirteenth eclipses of the season on Aug 8, 11, and 13 respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance. A real-time procedure was executed on Aug 12 to clear a glitch counter that incremented during eclipse exit on Aug 11. The counter increment is expected under certain timing and thermal conditions. An aspect camera dark current calibration was performed from the on-board loads on Aug 8. An assessment of the data indicates nominal aspect camera performance and that the number of CCD warm pixels is increasing at the expected rate. A Chandra press release was issued on Aug 14 as a NASA press release describing observations of the supernova SN 2014J in the nearby galaxy M82, one of the closest supernovas discovered in decades. SN 2014J is a Type Ia supernova, an important class of objects used to measure the expansion of the Universe. Chandra data is being used to help determine what caused SN 2014J to explode. The non-detection of X-rays from Chandra gives information about the environment around the star before SN 2014J exploded. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/14_releases/press_081414.html Starting next week the routine observation scheduling cycle will cover two weeks. The schedule of targets for the next two weeks is shown below and includes an observation of SGR 1935+2154, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time TOO on Aug 7, and an observation of NGC 3256 coordinated with NuSTAR. |
