During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned. A Chandra press release was issued on Oct 27 as a NASA press release describing observations of the Perseus and Virgo galaxy clusters. Chandra observations of two galaxy clusters suggest turbulence may be preventing hot gas there from cooling. This addresses a long-standing question of why the vast amounts of hot gas in clusters do not cool to form large numbers of stars. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/14_releases/press_102714.html Of note this week was the Einstein Fellows Symposium held in Cambridge MA on Oct 28-29. Presentations were made by 28 current Fellows, covering a wide range of topics in observational and theoretical astrophysics research. Also of note this week was the release on Oct 29 of CXCDS 10.3 for standard processing, which provides for the migration of the CXC Archive Servers and Web Servers from Solaris to Linux. The schedule of targets for the next two weeks is shown below and includes observations of SN2014C and IGR J17454-2919, which were accepted as Targets of Opportunity on Oct 21 and 22 respectively, an observation of NGC 247, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time TOOs on Oct 21, an observation of IC 10 X-1 coordinated with NuSTAR, an observation of Y Gem coordinated with the VLA, and observations of Mrk590 and the Crab coordinated with HST. |
